Ford happened to be better prepared than the other US car makers to deal with this economy. The thing is, Ford was actually trying to figure how they could help GM. Ford figured that if GM's went under, so would some of the same vendors that they use. What still bugs me is the cash for clunkers, that profited the Japanese and Korean car makers with OUR tax-dollars! It should have been cash for clunkers if you purchase a Ford, GM or Chrysler built car! That might have helped the Big 3! I said, "might"!
I'm bugged, too, that cash for clunker dollars could be used for any vehicle, including those made in other countries or whose HQ's are overseas. My sense of being "bugged" escalated to being irate, though, as I watched report after report by national news that showed an American product (even Fords) on video while the reporter talked about the clunkers, but I think 100% of the time the segment was recorded at an Asian car dealer and showed new Toyotas or Hondas, etc. being driven off as the replacement for the clunker! Never a Ford dealership with a new Focus being driven off, though Ford products were in 2 or 3 of the top 10 new purchase positions. This is a furtherance of our medias practice of showing Asian autos when doing stories on quality or fuel economy, though the stats haven't supported that US car quality is lower since maybe mid-90's or so. We humans are very visual (ask any ad agency) and these visual links truly stunt the sales of US auto products!
I own a Ford and plan to buy another. They produce good vehicles and have a good business model. Can't blame GM for taking free cash but I wonder how much all the adverting costs to tell me how lucky I am to have the chance to buy their expensive cars. Can blame the gov for throwing tax dollars their way, making an interest free loan, and selling GM shares at a discount.
fords are great, the economy is terrible, ford would still be gret even if the took a bailout.
